What is the most common cause of toothache in children?
Topic 2 in a series of articles about primary care teeth.
If your child has a toothache? Most will fall into 2 cases:
?⚕️ Case 1: The baby is teething
Parents follow topic 1 (Tooth development of children) to see if the child is at the age of teething or not?
Parents should check if the gums are slightly “inflammed” and covering something white look like a tooth? If yes, then the baby is going to have a new tooth. You can help relieve your baby’s gum pain by a cold piece of boiled carrot: let your child bite into the teething gum. This will help him/ her feel a lot more comfortable.
?⚕️ Case 2: The child has cavities or worse, pulp inflammation or tooth abscess
Baby got pain when chewing? Pain even while sleeping? Baby crying because of toothache?
Parents should check the baby’s teeth, if there is tooth decay, the baby should be taken to the dentist early to handle promptly.
If it is only tooth decay, the doctor will remove caries for the baby, and fill it in, promptly prevent cavities from entering the pulp, helping the baby regain healthy teeth to chew.
If it is already pulpitis, the dentist will remove the damaged tooth marrow, wash the root of the tooth, what is called root canal treatment, prevent the infection from going deep into the bone, then re-fill it. Although the tooth has been “marrow dead”, at least it still retains, helping the baby to have enough teeth to chew as well as keeping room for permanent teeth later.
If it has already had pulpitis, abscesses, pus, with face swelling, your baby should be treated as soon as possible. Depending on the condition of the teeth and the age, the doctor will take the pulp or extract the baby teeth to treat the infection.

?⚕️ The doctor’s recommendation:
In fact, root canal treatment for children is very miserable, not as easy as it is for adults. Children are naturally afraid of the doctor, root canal treatment even requires anesthesia, causing stress for the baby. The baby cries, the parents will be very sorry.
So parents should take care, avoid tooth decay, and treat infection early since the treatment is simple and quick.
? “Just a baby tooth, just let it go, just remove it out, please” … This is a common requirement that dentists often hear from parents. Actually, the creation of the baby tooth has perfect reasons. Baby teeth are usually thought useless but they are not useless at all. Parents can read the next article to understand “what will happen to the permanent teeth if the baby teeth are lost too early”
