What are removable dentures?

Dentures are removable dental prosthetics which can restore the missing teeth for edentulous patients to obtain natural look and function.

Two types of dentures are available – complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are given for those who lost some teeth and remain several ones.

Indication and advantages of removable dentures

It’s for a partially edentulous or fully edentulous patient who desires to have replacement teeth for grinding function, especially for pronunciation and aesthetic reasons.

Most of cases of removable dentures are due to patients’ requirement which may relate to age and financial concerns or indicated by dentist for the following reasons:

  • Missing many teeth or missing all teeth.
  • Missing above three teeth, patient does not want or does not qualify for fixed prosthodontics or dental implants.
  • Complete removable denture supported by dental implants.

The process of creating and delivering removable dentures at Udental Clinic

Step 1: The diagnostic records appointment

  • When dentures are an option, peri-apical radiographs may be exposed to any abutment teeth to evaluate their structural worthiness for anchoring partial dentures.
  • In some cases, a panoramic radiograph or cone beam (CBCT) scan may be required to visualize the amount of remaining bone that is present on which to support the dentures. CBCT will also be investigated in case of denture over the implant.
  • Initial impression will be taken to record the dental details.

Step 2: The second appointment for removable dentures

  • For partial denture: Rest preparations – Custom tray impressions – Guide planes, and tooth selection.
  • For complete denture: Border molding – Custom tray impressions.

Step 3: Frame try-in

  • If the denture is a partial: framework is evaluated for passive fit (to be sure it’s not putting pressure on teeth); retentiveness (to see whether the clasps will hold it in place effectively); and function with the opposing teeth (to be sure the patient won’t be biting down on the metal framework).
  • If the denture is a complete: establish the proper facial contours and vertical separation of the jaws.
  • Record the occlusion.

Step 4: Wax try-in

  • A wax version of the removable dentures will be tried in the patient’s mouth (the teeth are set in rigid pink wax).
  • The tooth position, bite plane location, phonetics and appearance will be evaluated while it’s still possible to move the teeth and re-shape the bite plane.
  • When everything is adjusted properly, the denture will be returned to the laboratory for processing in acrylic.

Step 5: Frame try-in

  • On the date of delivery, the denture will be placed in the mouth, and the bite will be adjusted. Pressure spots will be eliminated and specific instructions given on the wear and care of the removable denture(s).

  • Frequently, at least 24-hour follow-up is needed to inspect the dentures and oral tissues. Multiple follow up appointments are commonly necessary over several month time.
