Periodontal treatment procedure at Udental Clinic

Gingivitis treatment

  • Scaling of teeth which involves with scarping dental plaque and tartar out of tooth crown surfaces, using ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments. This can be done with or without anesthesia injection.
  • Anti-microbial mouth rinse may be prescribed to use at home to help control bacteria in the mouth.
  • Everyone should have periodically teeth cleaning at least twice a year to prevent gingivitis and screen for any defects of teeth and surrounding tissues.

Periodontitis treatment

Step 1: Collect data and scaling

  • Collect data for periodontal record: deep of pockets, level of alveolar bone before treatment. Data will be updated continuously during treatment process.
  • Scaling of teeth to remove dental plaque and tartar on tooth crowns and necks.

Step 2: Non-surgical treatment

  • Anesthesia injection will be administered to prevent pain in procedure
  • Root planning – the scaler (a small scraping tool also used in a regular cleaning) or ultrasonic tool is used to remove tartar and smooth the surface of root, which is called root planning. Though scaling and root planning is sometimes completed in one session, multiple appointments are typically necessary.

Accompanied with dental intervention, medicines including anti-biotics may be prescribed to control infection in gums and supporting tissues around the teeth. There will be a mouth wash to support the treatment at home.

Step 3: Surgical stage

  • After several visits to follow non-surgical periodontal treatment schedule, the dentist checks the pocket depth to determine the effect of scaling and root planning. At this point, many patients do not require any further active treatment, only preventive care. If the periodontal pockets are deep and the supportive bone is lost, surgery may be necessary to help prevent tooth loss.
  • Surgery allows the dentist to access hard-to-reach areas under the gum and along the roots where tartar and plaque have accumulated. Eliminating this bacterial stronghold as well as regenerating bone and soft tissue help to reduce pockets and repair damage caused by the progressing disease.
  • Bone surgery, including bone grafts may be indicated. Soft tissue grafts can be used to cover roots or develop gum tissue where excessive gingival recession has occurred. Splints, bite guards or other appliances may be used to stabilize loose teeth and to aid in the regeneration of tissue during healing.
  • Once the periodontal treatment is completed, regular appointments for follow up are necessary to do assessment of treatment and to do intervention if needed. Frequent checkups and cleanings are needed to keep the gums free of disease.
